DeSoto -- Fashion designers have an impact on our lives every, single, day. Your favorite jeans, that skirt you just can't do without, oh and that tee, no matter how many times you put it on it still looks fly.
Designers help us decide what we`re going to wear for the next four seasons whether we know it or not. They dictate the trends! Not to mention, helping change our identity at least, for a bit.
But do you ever wonder how your clothes are made? Who made them? And how they were brought to life, only to end up in your closet? Well this summer, the next "it" designer may be born. The "U Design Teen Fashion/Sewing Camp 2016,” established by fashion designer Uniquka Johnson-Christian, is in full effect.
"I’m used to creating pieces and designs for other people. But honestly, it's not as fulfilling for me as it is working with kids and teenagers and actually showing them how you can actually create your own apparel,” says Christian.
The camp is held at the DeSoto Public Library completely free of cost for the students. Now, that alone is something to celebrate!
"It’s more of an experience. You're not just going to come and just learn how to sew and that's it. No! A part of the experience is you learn how to sew, you get to see what it’s like to put together a fashion show, you get to work with your own model, you style your own model, you determine everything, every aspect about how your outfit is going to look,” explained Christian.
"It’s a chance I can express myself and my fashion and I think that's so cool every girl here can express themselves without being judged because who cares! It's their fashion,” said Mariah Johnson, a camper.
For some, this is the first time they touch a piece of fabric.
"At first when I thought about sewing, I was like, that sounds boring, we just sitting here just messing with threads and stuff but when I got here and I started doing it, I met a lot of cool friends and learned a lot," said Mckaylah Best, another Sewing Camp participant.
The main purpose of the camp is for students to showcase their final ensembles in the teen fashion show and competition.
In the end, whether they win or not, the students have used their creativity to construct something from nothing and that’s what being a designer is all about.
