Zara isn't thought to negatively impact local brand.

Retail New Zealand says having global brands open up shop here is great for the economy.

Over the weekend Spanish clothing chain Zara unveiled the storefront for it's first ever New Zealand shop, located at Sylvia Park in Auckland.

General manager for public affairs Greg Harford doesn't think having Zara here will negatively impact local brands.

"But what it will do probably is grow the market overall, so that people are shopping more, taking advantage of the brands that shops like Zara bring into the market, as well as shopping at New Zealand firms."

Zara's building team worked overnight to erect new storefront branding in time for Sunday morning's grand reveal. The 2528 square metre store - constructed by Kiwi Property - is in the mall's fashion precinct, opposite Glassons and Country Road outlets.
